Aromatase in colon carcinoma.

چکیده
Aromatase is one of the key estrogen-producing enzymes and is regarded as one of the therapeutic targets in estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients. Human colon carcinoma has also been recently proposed as being an estrogen-responsive malignancy, but the detailed status of aromatase has not yet been reported. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the aromatase expression in colon carcinoma using immunohistochemistry and real-time polymerase chain reaction. Aromatase mRNA was significantly higher (p=0.03) in colon carcinoma than in the corresponding non-neoplastic mucosa (n=31). Aromatase immunoreactivity tended to be positively associated with the intratumoral concentration of estrogens (n=53), and in particular, the concentration of estradiol was significantly higher (p=0.02) in aromatase-positive cases in men. Aromatase immunoreactivity was detected in the cytoplasm of the carcinoma cells in 217/328 (65%) examined colon carcinoma cases. Aromatase immunoreactivity was significantly positively correlated with tubular differentiation, and inversely correlated with Ki-67 labeling index, although not necessarily correlated with the clinical outcome of the patients. All these results demonstrate that colon carcinoma expresses functional aromatase, and that estrogens are locally synthesized in the tumor tissues. The findings reported here could contribute to a better understanding of the actions of estrogen in colon carcinoma.

Unusual Metastatic Patterns of Invasive Lobular Carcinoma of the Breast
Invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast has similar patterns of metastatic disease when compared to invasive ductal carcinoma; however, lobular carcinoma metastasizes to unusual sites more frequently. We present a 65-year-old female with a history of invasive lobular breast carcinoma (T3N3M0) treated with modified radical mastectomy and aromatase-inhibitor therapy who underwent a surveillance ...
متن کاملColon carcinoma metastases with extension to chest wall and pericardium
Management of locally advanced colon cancer metastases is challenging and operation carries an increased risk of morbidity and mortality. The knowledge of exact sites of involvement can aid the surgeon to make a decision regarding complete resection or palliative therapy. PET/CT scan is an advantage in this setting because metabolic alterations often precede the anatomic changes; moreover, it c...
متن کاملEffects of Combined Sonodynamic and Photodynamic Therapies on a Colon Carcinoma Tumor Model
Objective(s) Although photodynamic therapy is considered as a noninvasive method, most photosensitizers are susceptible to ultrasound. Therefore, it is expected that the combination of two activation methods might have a synergistic effect. This probable effect has been investigated in this study. Materials and Methods This study was conducted on colon carcinoma ...

Background: The aberrant and altered patterns of gene expression play an important role in the biology of cancer and tumorigenesis. DNA methylation and histone deacetylation are the most studied epigenetic mechanisms. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACIs) such as valproic acid (VPA) and trichostatin A (TSA) are a group of anticancer compounds for the treatment of solid and hematological canc...
متن کاملEvaluation of the Combined Effects of Sonodynamic and Photodynamic Therapies in a Colon Carcinoma Tumor Model (CT26)
Introduction: Photodynamic therapy is a noninvasive therapeutic method for tumors with a maximum depth of 5 mm. On the other hand, most photosensitizers are also susceptible to ultrasound waves (the basis of sonodynamic therapy). Therefore, it is expected that a combination of the two therapeutic methods will increase effectiveness of photodynamic therapies for lower doses of sensitizer and cur...
